History of UPRHS

The UP Rural High School was established by virtue of Philippine Legislative Act 3337 (Section 4). It was designated as a vocational high school under the administration of the Department of Agricultural Education under the College of Agriculture.

In its first ten years, agriculture was one of the thrusts of the school. Boys and girls had agricultural courses with 19 hours of field work per week. From 1939 to 1959, two curricula (boys/girls) were used. During the 1940s English and United States History were replaced by Nippongo, Filipino and Reading. In the 1960s, the curriculum was changed to college preparatory. Currently, the curriculum is still that of college preparatory but it is focused more on the sciences. There are changes being made to enhance the students' learning and address their needs to prepare them for tertiary education.

From its old site in what is now the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs, the school was transferred to the current Mathematics Building of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics in 1969. In May 1999, UPRHS was transferred to its current location in Barangay Paciano Rizal, Bay, Laguna.

UP Rural High School has undergone several changes in its 74 years. Founded as a vocational high school and as a center for research in agricultural education, it has been transformed into a science high school preparing the youth for a career in the post-industrial era, the Age of Information and the Age of Biotechnology. It has truly gone a long way not only in space and time but in its achievements, vision, and outlook.

Facilities and Development plans

The new school site, with an area of 4.9 hectares, has one main building and the adjacent laboratory building. The administration office, the audio-visual room, the library, the Ruralite (official school organ) office, and two faculty rooms are situated in the main building of the school. There are eight regular classrooms and four science laboratory rooms. UPRHS also has a computer laboratory under the Math Department and a sewing room under the Home Economics Department. Other facilities include the school canteen, the JSLS Gym and the Agriculture Laboratory field.

The school also plans to upgrade the science laboratories and computer laboratory as well as establish a network connection. Other major infrastructure plans include the construction of a Library building and a Home Economics building.

The Library

The library has a total area of 197.125 sq, m. with a total collection of 6,530 volumes and can accommodate forty to fifty clientele.
