The Postharvest Horticulture Training and Research Center (PHTRC) has specialized library that provides services and information materials to support the instructional, research and extension needs in the area of Postharvest horticulture of the various units of the university as well as other research institutions and private and government agencies.

SERVICES
The PHTRC library's principal services are restrospective searches, Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI), Internet searches, current awareness and computer search.
• Retrospective searches provide a computer list of bibliographic topics to answer information requests of the faulty, researchers and students.
• SDI is a regular current awareness service based on the most recent inputs to the database. These are in the form of reprints, newspaper clippings and publications of the PHTRC staff.
• Internet services using the OVID online database. This program permits searches of several databases, giving information on titles, journal titles, keywords, authors, years of publication and language. These parameters can be used independently or in combination. Search results can be displayed, printed and/or downloaded in file form along with the e-mail address of the corresponding author.
• Computer search - Bibliographic data on postharvest handling and storage of fruits and vegetables, rootcrops, ornamentals and related fields of interest are provided thru computerized retrieval with the following cost. UPLB users will be charges P20.00 per hour (or a fraction thereof) for searching or browsing and P1.00 per citation printed while non-UPLB users will be charged P30.00 per hour (or a fraction thereof) for searching or browsing P4.00 per sheet printed.
OTHER SERVICES
• Circulation and Access. Whenever coming to the Library, be sure to bring your ID card, as it is required for library admittance and book checkout. Present it at the Circulation desk for book checkout. NOTE: All ID cards are non-transferable, and may be used only by the person named on the card, who is responsible for the card's safe-keeping and use.
• Intrasystem Loan allows students, faculty, and staff to request books or journal articles from a library within the UP System. Subject to university policies, rules, and regulations.
• Copying facilities. Photocopying of library materials is provided for a fee of P1.00/copy. Theses/dissertations are not allowed to be photocopied except the abstract, review of literature, and bibliography. Requested articles could also be sent through e-mail, telefax or postage with fee.
• Ask a librarian. Reference questions, needs and other library information/assistance can be addressed below:
• Library orientation is done every semester during the opening of the classes. This could also be in online system wherein the library clients can browse all information regarding its use, policies, rules, and regulations.
RESERVE BOOKS
Reserve books are to be used in the library during the day. Overnight loans are on first-come, first-served basis. Student/staff are allowed only one reservation per day. Reservations may be made from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Students must return overnight books within the first business hour the following day. They should always leave their ID's.
REPRINTS AND VERTICAL FILE
Reprints and vertical file on postharvest technology of fruits, vegetables, rootcrops and ornamentals are acquired from different journals, technical papers, research reports annual reviews, bulletins, books and other publications.
These are indexed according to author, title arranged by subject category on
postharvest and are filed with index card catalogue. Subject coverage under each broad topic of fruits and vegetables includes: pre-harvest affecting quality after harvest, harvesting, transport packinghouse operations, storage, ripening, postharvest pest diseases and physiological disorders of fruits and vegetables.
Whenever students/staff borrow, they should refer the index number to the librarian. Students who wish to photocopy these materials may do so provided they have to leave their ID's, fill up the borrowers card and return the materials within the day. Reprints and vertical files are for room use only.
THESES AND DISSERTATIONS
The graduate and undergraduate thesis/manuscript are arranged by subject and alphabetically arranged by author. Dissertations are classified according to the Library of congress Classification Scheme and are filed in the card catalogue.
Thesis and dissertations are strictly for room use only.
Portions of these materials allowed for photocopying are review of literature, methodology and references/bibliographies.
MICROFORMS
Microfiche reader is available for everybody's use. Microfiche collection includes literature on postharvest technology of fruits, vegetables and rootcrops.
These are indexed and filed at the box with corresponding numbers.
