Librarians hold S-W on Library Five-Year Development Plan
A Seminar-Workshop on University Library Five-Year Development Plan: 2009-2013 with the theme “Towards Excellent Knowledge Center” was held last October 28, 2008 at the University Library. Participants consisted of Librarians and/or Staff-in-charge from different UP Los Baños Unit/College Libraries and Reading Rooms. Vice-Chancellor for Instruction, Dr. Rita P. Laude delivered the Inspirational Talk.
The S-W aimed to come up with a Strategic Plan of the University Library for the next five years gearing towards excellent knowledge center. The strategic plan involved three major concerns namely: Library Modernization, specifically Library automationusing iLib, an integrated library system developed by UP Diliman Team for UP System and digitization of theses collections; Library Re-organization, revisiting the organizational structure of the University Library and establishing recommendation to upgrade current College Reading Rooms into a standard academic library; and Personnel Component, reviewing the current needs for College Librarian as well as support staff in the accomplishment of the Five-Year Development Plan. Mrs. Concepcion DL. Saul, University Librarian, gave the overview and mechanics of the workshop.
Output of the workshop was submitted to Vice-Chancellor Laude as part of the plans and programs for the next five years, and in accordance with the UPLB Strategic Review.(V.P. Alcantara)
New Library Structure to House the University Special Collection
The new structured building on the right side of the University Library will house the University Special Collection, which will consists of UPLB publications, Theses, UPLB archives and rare books, professorial chair lectures and Presidents of the Philippines collections. The said area will also be used for the exhibit of UPLB Publications from 1909 to 2009 this coming year in connection with the Centennial Celebration of UPLB.
Relocation of other sections of the Library will soon be done, due to the plan of the University Administrators to occupy the Third floor area of the building this coming 2009. Filipiniana and Serials, Documentation and Document Delivery, and Administrative Sections, including the Librarian’s Office will be housed at the Second Floor, while the Circulation, Reserve and Reference Sections will be relocated at the First Floor. Technical Services such as Acquisition and Cataloging Sections will remain at the Basement of the Library. Computer and Multimedia Services Section will join the University Special Collection occupying the Ground Floor and extended to the Basement of the main library building. (V.P. Alcantara)

Saul as the New University Librarian
Mrs. Concepcion DL. Saul was appointed University Librarian (UL) from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009. She succeeds Mrs. Vilma G. Anday, who availed of early retirement last June 1, 2008. Ms. Saul had served as UL for two years, from March 7, 2005 to March 6, 2007
Ms. Saul finished BS Education at the Far Eastern University in 1978 and MS in Library Science at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1990.
She started her professional career as Library Assistant at the Philippine Training Centers for Rural Development, UP Los Baños. As her career grows, she rendered library consultancy to different unit libraries within UPLB. In 1982, she was assigned to manage the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH) Library, and became College Librarian.
She has been a lecturer, resource speaker, facilitator and moderator in various local conferences, seminar-workshops and trainings on library and information science. Before her appointment, Ms. Saul handled projects/studies pertaining to BIOTECH Library and Information System, where she is the Project/Study Leader.

University Library offers Information Literacy Program
The University Library as the leading source of information offers Information Literacy program to all interested group of students, researchers and faculty. The program has just started earlier this school year 2008-2009 with the group of students from Agricultural Chemistry class under Dr..Milagros Peralta, as the first group to experience the usefulness of the program. This was followed by English courses of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Information Literacy program aims to impart knowledge on different available resources in all forms very useful to library users. It makes them aware of the different information sources available in the library both in print and online. It is one way of educating students in different searching strategies; inculcate to them the social and legal issues concerning the use of this information, thus, making them independent life longer learners in the future.

Library webpage now accessible 24/7
With the expertise of the newly hired Information System Analyst of the University Library, Mr. J Darell M. Sapin, and with the assistance of Ms. Mary Ann M. Ingua, Head of the Computer Services Section (CSS), and the staff of the Information Technology Center (ITC), the accessibility of the Library webpage worldwide 24/7 a week was made possible. The web was initially available through the UPLB Intranet since May 24, 2008. It was in July 2, 2008, when it became available worldwide directly via: http://library.uplb.edu.ph/ and indirectly through UPLB Website http://www.uplb.edu.ph under the e-Services link.
The Library webpage has the following links features: UP Constituent Units; College/Unit Libraries within UPLB; Search the catalog through the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) using iLib system; New Library Resources containing New Acquisitions’ List; Library Collection; Information Literacy Schedule; Library News and Events; Librarians’ Resources; Reference Desk Online; and Library Services and Information Delivery.
At present, the CSS is on the process of completing its contents, providing data on each link, creating other possible links that may be interested to users, and exploring the web for its strength and weaknesses.
